From a friend who works at a distinguished Bay Area university, quoting an admissions officer:

"Smart Asian kids who play violin or piano? They grow on trees."

So Asians, put down the violin. Step away from the ivory keys. Pick up a basketball a la Jeremy Lin. 

And whatever you do, don't tell them you want to be a doctor or engineer.
